Automobile Insurance

Automobile Insurance provides coverage for an insured vehicle. When an accident occurs, causing damages to the car or lives, bodies or property of a third party and passenger(s), the insured will be indemnified for damages in the amount agreed to in the insurance policy.

How many types of Automobile Insurance policies are there? How are they different?

Automobile Insurance is divided into two types, these are:

  1. Compulsory Automobile Insurance, which is required by law for every car under Thailand’s Road Protection Act, B.E. 2535. Failure to comply carries a maximum fine of 10,000 Baht.
  2. Voluntary Automobile Insurance allows the insured to choose coverage as appropriate, or according to the risks of vehicle use.

1.What is covered by compulsory automobile insurance?

Coverage for damage to life, body and/or health resulting from an automobile accident, as detailed below:
  a. Initial payments, without proof of guilt

  • Medical expenses for injuries (paid as per actual expenses) Baht 15,000 per person
  • Death, loss of limb or permanent disability Baht 35,000 per person

  b. For damages exceeding initial amounts, the victim will receive such amount after proof of guilt is determined that the victim is not legally liable. The coverage plus initial damages are as followsนี้

  • Medical expenses for injuries Baht 50,000 per person
  • Death, loss of limb or permanent disability Baht 200,000 per person
  • Daily compensation of 200 Baht for up to 20 days if hospitalized as an inpatient at a medical facility up to Baht 4,000 per person
  • The maximum coverage for items 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 combined up to Baht 204,000 per person

2.What are the options for Voluntary Automobile Insurance plans?

Voluntary Automobile Insurance is offered in 5 policy Plans, as follows:

Policy Plan 1 provides coverage for:

  • Liability for damages to life, body or health of a third party
  • Liability for third party property
  • Liability for loss of or fire to the insured automobile
  • Liability for damages to the insured automobile.

Policy Plan 2 provides coverage for:

  • Liability for damages to life, body or health of a third party
  • Liability for third party property
  • Liability for loss of or fire to the insured automobile.

Policy Plan 3 provides coverage for:

  • Liability for damages to life, body or health of a third party
  • Liability for third party property.

Policy Plan 4 provides coverage for:

  • Liability for third party property of Baht 100,000 per occurrence.

Policy Plan 5 provides coverage for specific hazards.
Plan 2+

  • Liability for damages to life, body or health of a third party
  • Liability for third party property
  • Liability for loss or fire to the vehicle body
  • Liability for damages to the insured automobile in case of an accident with a land vehicle(s).
  • * In case of an accident with a land vehicle(s) and the insured is at fault, the insured shall be responsible for initial losses of up to Baht 2,000 for damages to the insured automobile.

Plan 3+

  • Liability for damages to life, body or health of third party
  • Liability for third party property
  • Liability for damages to the insured automobile in case of an accident with a land vehicle(s).
  • • * In case of an accident with a land vehicle(s) and the insured is at fault, the insured shall be responsible for initial losses of up to Baht 2,000 for damages to the insured automobile.
